Duty cuts may make white goods cheaper

THE prices of durables are likely to be reduced due to the import duty cuts of raw materials including plastics, chemicals and colour picture tubes (CPTs), reports Neha Kohli from New Delhi. Industry associations like Elcina (electronic components industries association) have said the prices of durables are likely to be marginally reduced by up to 2%. While Elsina has said the price reduction on electronic gadgets could be up to 2% reduction in prices, Cema(consumer electronics and appliances manufacturers association) has maintained that only imported CPTs and compressors will be reduced by Rs 20-Rs 40 because of import duty cuts in the two components. The customs duty of CPTs has been reduced to 10% and that of compressors to 7.5% from 12.5%. The government had in January cut the import duty of copper to 7.5% from 12.5% and Abs and polylol plastics to 5% from 10%. Coming budget has also brought with it import duty cuts of most plastics , organic and inorganic chemicals, tyrene and frits.
