Car makers offer sops in India Car retail market

If you're thinking of buying a car, now could be the right time. Most car companies and dealers are doling out lucrative discounts to push sales during April, which is considered as a lean month. The launch of three new models in the first week of the month has also added to the sales pressure. Maruti 800, the cheapest car in the country is now available for Rs 15,000 less, bringing the on-road price marginally over Rs 2 lakh. "Last month, the Maruti 800 had a discount of Rs 2,500. Since April is a lean month with most people on vacation etc, heavy discounts are being offered to attract customers,"a dealer said. Similar discounts are being offered for the petrol variants of the WagonR and the Swift. Maruti Esteem, priced at an ex-showroom price (Mumbai) of Rs 4.63 lakh, is available for Rs 30,000 less. Hyundai Motor India is also offering incentives like free insurance on the 1.3 litre Getz and the Santro, which could save anything from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. "With new Getz Prime, most dealers are looking at clearing stocks of the old version and are offering good discounts and incentives,"a dealer said. The Tata Indica Xeta is attracting the highest discounts of up to Rs 25,000 in its segment. "Offering substantial discounts is now a norm. As more and more car models are introduced, there is increased pressure to sell and free accessories, insurance schemes and cash discounts go a long way in aiding the customer to make the final choice,"an industry expert said.
